The LEED™ Green Building rating system is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. If you’re designing towards obtaining the maximum number of LEED credits on your building project, it’s important to understand the sections, credits and products that are impacted by landscape paver choices. The following details how AZEK Pavers can contribute to qualifying for credits in those sections.

In some projects, using only AZEK Pavers have provided enough value to earn the recycled content and stormwater design credits.

While not impacting as significantly as the previous credit areas, AZEK Pavers can also contribute in the following areas:

Material and Resources

2.1, 2.2 – Construction Waste Management

Divert construction, demolition, and land clearing debris from disposal in landfills and incinerators. Redirect recovered resources back to the manufacturing process. Redirect reusable materials to the appropriate sites.

Requirement: Recycle and/or salvage at least 50% or 75% (by weight or volume) of non-hazardous construction and demolition debris. Develop and implement a construction waste manegement plan quantifying material diversion goals.

AZEK: AZEK Pavers are the first composite paver manufacturer with a closed-loop recycling program which redirects recovered AZEK Pavers back to the manufacturing process. 4.1, 4.2 – Recycled Content

Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing the impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

Requirement: Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes 10% or 20% (based on cost) of the total value of the materials in the project.

AZEK: AZEK Pavers contain approximately 95% recycled content including scrap car tires and plastic. AZEK Pavers can supply the appropriate documentation needed for your LEED submittal packet. AZEK Pavers must be aggregated with all other recycled content materials in order to acheive this credit.

5.1, 5.2 – Regional Materials

Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

Requirement: Use building products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for minimum of 10% or 20% (based on cost) of the total materials value. If only a fraction of the product is extracted, harvested or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) shall contribute to the regional value.

Sustainable Sites

6.1, 6.2 – Stormwater Design

Limit disruption of natural water hydrology by reducing impervious cover, increasing on-site infiltration, reducing or eliminating pollution from stormwater runoff, and eliminating contaminants.

Requirement: Implement a stormwater manegament plan that decreases the volume of stormwater runoff from the one- or two-year 24-hour design storm, reduces impervious cover, promotes infiltration, and captures and treats the stormwater runoff using acceptable best manegement practices.

AZEK: AZEK Pavers are a pervious pavement acheiving over 400 in./hr stormwater filtration. AZEK Pavers can be combined with a stormwater management solution to meet this requirement. Please contact AZEK for a consultation on stormwater management solutions using AZEK Pavers.

7.1 – Heat Island Effect

Reduce heat islands (thermal gradient differences between developed and undeveloped areas) to minimize impact on microclimate and human and wildlife habitat.

Requirement: Provide any combination of the following for 50% of the site hardscape: shade (within 5 years occupancy), paving materials with a Solar Reflectance Index of at least 29, open grid pavement system. Or, place a minimum of 50% of parking spaces under cover. Any roof used to shade covered parking must have an SRI of at least 29.

AZEK: AZEK is currently developing a suite of compliant colors with a minimum SRI of 29. Please contact AZEK for a list of colors that meet this requirement.

The credits apply for New Construction (LEED-NC) and LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB).
